Since 2008, the playing field has seen some quite dramatic developments that have transformed the site into an exciting facility that will be available to be used and enjoyed by people of all ages.
In 2003, the site was little more than a field with a new but unused pavilion and a few pieces of rusty, unsafe play equipment that attracted very few people. So, the playing field committee decided to survey the children of the village to find out what they most wanted from their playing field and the results showed overwhelmingly that a new play area was their number 1 priority with a multi-sports court coming second.
The committee set about obtaining designs and costings and trying to raise the necessary funding but it was not until planning permission was granted in 2007 that the work of turning hopes into reality really began. With help from North Lincolnshire Council, almost £100,000 of Lottery funding was secured to allow us to commence Phase 1 and a new, modern play area was installed in July 2008.
Since then, the previously deserted site has become much livelier with parents & toddlers calling in on their way home from school and small children and youths now have a great meeting place. In addition, Westwoodside FC’s football team is based at the field, making use of one of the best Senior football pitch in the area and using the pavilion’s excellent changing facilities.

New Play Area
But we didn’t rest on our laurels then, working hard to raise the funds for Phase 2, the floodlit multi-sports court and this was finally completed in November 2010. Once again, we are indebted to the Lottery, N. Lincs. Council and the North Lincolnshire LEADER Programme for providing the majority of the funding. We must also thank Haxey Parish Council who continue to give us excellent support and have provided funds towards the project and Axholme Lions who also awarded us a grant towards the floodlighting.
It was always intended to have the court open to all at week-ends but we found damage was resulting so unfortunately we cannot do this any longer. Regular bookings are being taken for 5-a-side football training. Other sports, including basketball, tennis, hockey, netball and short cricket can also be played on the court all year round. For further information or to enquire about booking the sports court or the pavilion, please contact Richard Carter on 07771 828727.
The pavilion rooms, can be booked for a very competitive rate for birthday parties, meetings, clubs etc, by contacting the number above.
